Many Canadian Athletic Commissions require combat athletes to have a current CT Scan done in order to be cleared to fight. CT scans became popular because they offer a quick, relatively cheap and painless way to get 3D pictures so detailed they give an almost surgical view into the body. But, are the risks outweighing the benefits? The Yahoo! article makes the point that CT Scans emit a much higher dose of radiation as compared to other medical tests such as an Ultrasound or a MRI. In addition, the use of CT Scans is soaring.
The Canadian Mixed Martial Arts Association is endeavouring to explore this issue further in the upcoming weeks through discussions with various Canadian Athletic Commissions.
